Olympic Park Speedway - Australian Solo Championship Rd2

3rd January 2010

Queenslander Troy Batchelor extended his lead in the Australian solo speedway championship after winning the second round at Mildura’s Olympic Park Speedway last night, Sunday.
The home crowd was stunned when brave Merbein rider Mark Lemon rocked up for practice after spending several hours Saturday night in Adelaide Hospital after crashing into the fence at Gillman Speedway.
Lemon told Mildura officials that he would have a ride at practice and see how he went and when he felt good, took his place in the field and was the best of the Mildura riders on the night. He just went down to Queenslander Darcy Ward in the semi-final (Sedgeman 3rd, Proctor 4th).
For the final Rory Schlein had first pick of the gate, after a points count back from Chris Holder. But from the tapes it was Batchelor, who tore away and was never in danger, hitting the line some 30 metres in front of Holder, Ward then Schlein for the same result as the first round at Gillman.

* reportedly racing at Mildura wasn't as good as the previous round at Gillman. Track was slick, not much overtaking. NSW youngster Sam Masters did well, beating Chris Holder and Rory Schlein in heat 7.
The final round of the championship will be held at Newcastle Showground on Saturday night.

Newcastle Speedway - Australian Solo Championship Rd2

9th January 2010
Chris Holder won the Australian Championship last night at Newcastle Showground, winning the final round and outscoring his main rival, Troy Batchelor. Batchelor had won the previous two rounds in Adelaide and Mildura and led going into the meeting.

Shocks were in store as early as Heat 4, when Justin Sedgmen and Cory Gathercole gated ahead of Batchelor and thats how they finished. Getting a good start was paramount, particularly in the early stages.

Later Darcy Ward chased hard to pass Englishmen Joe Haines on the last turn, a good race. (Haines had come in for the injured Mark Lemon). Then Jason Doyle, just back from a serious arm injury, was involved in a first corner skirmish with Alex Davies.

Davies, slightly behind Doyle on gate 1, had nowhere to go and the pair touched and hurtled toward the fence at a rate of knots.

They were shaken but not stirred, riding in the re-run. Doyle ended up having pretty good night and made the B final, but Darcy Ward chose gate 1 and won easily. Batchelor chose 2, Gathercole 3 with Doyle out in 4. They finished in that order, Batchelor's night over - his fate lay in the next race.

For the decider Chris Holder chose gate 1. Woodward the (by that stage) useful outside, Schlien on 2 and Ward 3.

Holder had to win to keep his crown or victory would be Batchelors.

It was Chris who won from the start from Woodward, Ward 3rd from Schlein.

When Holder and Batchelor, both men in form, met in the heats Holder was taken VERY wide by Batchelor during the race, turn two (entrance to the back straight), which may have upset Chris.

As the pair rode back towards the pits, you could see Holder was furious and told Batchelor so, helmet banging helmet whilst still aboard their machines. Batchelor put his arm around Holder, but Chris would have none of it, shaking him off and lashing out with his foot as he rode off in disgust.

At the presentations neither Holder or Batchelor mentioned the other by name, nor were they noted to exchange pleasantries. Rory Schlien placed 3rd in the championship with 17-year old Ward 4th.
