Formula 250 Rules & Regulations.

REGULATIONS FOR FORMULA 250 SIDECARS.



1. Preference.
1.1 The reason for these regulations are to keep the class as an introduction class with little expense or outlay.
1.2 This outlay to be kept at approximately $1200- to $2800-, If excessive money appears to be spent in the opinion of the Committee you shall be allocated to a separate race or into the “B” Sidecars.
1.3 This rulebook applies in most cases or where other references are made, should there be any discrepancies the Manual of Motorcycle Sport shall prevail.

2. Category of Classes.
2.2 Class 1 – Senior Air Cooled (250cc 4 Stroke/200cc 2 stroke) or Water Cooled (250cc 4 Stroke) Formula 250’s – for Riders & Passengers 16yrs of age and over that can obtain a full competition licence.
2.2 Class 2 - Junior Air Cooled (250cc 4 Stroke) or Water Cooled (250cc 4 Stroke) Formula 250’s – for Riders & Passengers Under 16yrs of age that can obtain a Junior competition licence.

3. Claiming Rule.
3.1 The claiming rule shall apply to this class. The claim shall be $2000- (Cash) plus the entered sidecar of the person making the claim, and can only be made by a competitor who has already entered their machine into the race meeting.
3.2 Anyone who refuses to comply with the claiming rule will be required to put their machine on the trailer, and any points awarded to that machine for that day will be void.

4. Supercharging & Turbocharging.
4.1 Supercharging and Turbocharging are forbidden.

5. Freedom of Construction.
Providing that the sidecar complies with these regulations, there is no restriction, providing that it is in the opinion of the machine examiner and or the Steward of the meeting it is safe and not deemed of a dangerous construction.

6. Starting Devices.
6.1 They are not obligatory.
6.2 Kick starter levers; other than transverse must be folding.

7. Brakes.
7.1 No brakes shall be fitted to these sidecars.

8. Engines Capacity.
8.1 – Up to 250cc 4 stroke or 200cc 2 stroke air-cooled engines shall be used.
8.2 – Up to 250cc 4 stroke engines water cooled engines shall be used.
8.3 Junior – Up to 250cc 4 stroke engines are permitted.
8.4 Maximum Engine Capacity – 250cc
9 Engines / Carburettors.
9.1 All engines in this class must be of a mass produced based engine ie.: - Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha etc. and not purpose built race engines ie.: - Rotax, Speedway Solo type engines. They must also comply with the specifications as laid out in these regulations.


9.2 -Carburettors -
a) – Late model types may be used (flat slide etc).
9.3 A suitable material or fully enclosed box must enclose mechanical carburettor linkages.
9.4 All engines in this class must meet the following specifications:-
a) All casings must be as per manufacturers specifications;
b) Minor head work is permitted providing, the sizes of the valves are not altered, and only cleaning up of the ports is permitted;
c) No alterations to the profile of the cam/s are permitted;
d) Reed valves are not to be altered from manufacturer’s specifications;
e) Increasing the engine capacity is permitted, providing that only rebore or sleaving work is done and the engine capacity does not exceed the maximum tolerance, only components that are available over the counter are permitted to be used; Stroking of engines is prohibited.
d) Blueprinting of engines is permitted to make them conform to manufactures specifications.

9.6 Laying down of the engine are permitted providing it is not considered dangerous construction.

10. Exhaust system.
10.1 Straight out systems or exhausts that are over the prescribed noise limit will not be permitted.
10.2 Exhaust fumes must be discharged towards the rear of the machine, the fumes must not be discharged in such a manner as to raise dust and must not foul or hinder the rider, passenger or other competitors, and must be kept as standard as possible.
10.3 The exhaust system must be secured to the machine at a minimum of two locations onto the frame, one being at the rear.
10.4 If the silencers are re-packable, securing bolts must be safety wired.
10.5 Noise emissions must not exceed 98dba.

11. Handlebars & Controls.
11.1 Handlebar must not exceed 900mm, the ends must be blanked off with a solid material, and have handlebar grips attached to the ends not less than 150mm.
11.2 All levers must have a ball end of at least 19mm.
11.3 Throttle controls must be self-closing when not held by the hand.
11.4 Kill Switch must be fitted to the machine; this must cut out the ignition when pulled, operate on the primary circuit.
11.5 The Lanyard for the kill switch must not exceed 500mm when fully extended, whether it is coiled or not.
11.6 The lanyard must be attached around the rider’s wrist whenever the engine is operating, must not be taped to the handlebars unless the tape is easily torn.
11.7 Stops or other devices must be fitted to ensure a minimum clearance of 30mm between the handlebars / levers and any attachments or the body when on full lock.
12. Streamlining.
12.1 All streamlining fitted to sidecars must be free of sharp edges on the exposed extremities.

12.2 Forward streamlining attachments must have a minimum of 3 attachment points. One supporting the front forward section, and two supporting the rear section of the shell.
12.3 No part of the streamlining may be in front of a vertical line drawn through the exterior edge of the rear rim.

13. Wheels and Tyres.
13.1 There is NO restriction on the size or type of wheel or tyres to be used, with exception of the rear tyres, which must be a trials or Speedway type.
13.2 Nobby tyres are not permitted on the rear or sidecar wheel.
13.3 If cast or welded wheels are used, protection must be provided by filling in the gaps between the spokes.

14. Sidecar.
14.1 The sidecar must be positioned on the left side of the machine.
14.2 The sidecar must be fixed in at least 3 points.
14.3 The sidecar floor and surrounding area must be filled in, so as to not allow the riders or passengers hands or feet to be obstructed or be caught by moving parts.
14.4 Suitable handhold must be mounted on the left and right hand sides of the machine, position is optional.
14.5 Sidecar Wheel must have either a disc on both sides of the wheel with an ankle breaker or the wheel fully enclosed or a wing and a disc on the inside of the wheel. No restriction on the size or width of the wheel, the only restriction is on the tyre where knobby tyres are not permitted.
14.6 If the sidecar wheel is mounted on by a plate on both sides, the minimum diameter of the axle shall be 12mm, where the wheel is mounted on one side only the minimum diameter of the axle shall be 20mm. Stub axles are permitted but must have a 40mm minimum diameter at the base.
14.7 Aero panels, side panels and similar attachments may be used provided that they are constructed of metal, fibreglass or polycarbonate material, are free of sharp or protruding edges and are not dangerous to the rider / passenger or any other competitor.
14.8 All exterior barwork / tubework ends must be plugged or capped as to present a handlebars, swingarms or wheel axles of any machine.
14.10 Light alloys must not be used for wheel axles.

15. Mudguards.
15.1 Front Mudguards are optional.
15.2 Rear guards must extend down to axle height and must be valanced on both sides to axle height and fitted with a mudflap. This rear guard maybe incorporated into the rear seat mounting. As per figure 2.

16. Footrests.
16.1 Footrests on the Right side must be collapsible or linked by a continuous bar, with any open area between the continuous bar and the machine to be filled in with suitable material to stop a rider or passenger from trapping their feet.

17. Fuel.
17.1 The following fuels are permitted.
Normal pump petrol - Super / unleaded;
Avgas** / racing fuel (100 octane);
For 2 stroke engines the addition of oil is permitted;
Methanol is NOT permitted.
** Avgas may be used providing required log book & necessary paperwork is in order.

18. Fuel Tanks.
18.1 Fuel tanks must be of a standard type or of a type as approved by the Appendix J or Manual of Motorcycle Sport.

19. Protective Clothing and Equipment.
19.1 During practice and racing both riders and passengers must wear the following protective clothing and footwear as listed in this regulation.
19.2 Leathers either 1 or 2 piece (attached) are permitted, so are MX type clothing of either Nylon pants and race top (attached), or Full overalls with Long sleeved shirt and long trousers are permitted.

19.3 When MX type clothing or full overalls are used, Full MX style body armour with back protector must be used.
19.4 Boots must be at least calf length and constructed of leather or similar material.
19.5 Both the rider and passenger must wear gloves.
19.6 Wearing of a commercially manufactured back protector, which covers continuously the back from the collar line to the base of the spine.
19.7 Correctly fitting helmets must be worn and be of an approved type, it is the responsibility of the competitor or the parent / guardian to ensure that the helmet is correctly fitted.
19.8 Goggles must be used and must be of a non-shatter material.
19.9 Visors and peaks must be of a non-shatter material.
19.10 Helmet colours may be required by the Steward of the day and must be worn by both rider and passenger if requested to do so. When helmet colours are required the following colours must be used: - Red, Blue, White, Yellow, Green or Orange, Black. A competitor who has a helmet of the specified colour for any heat may wear the helmet without a helmet colour.
19.11 Hair longer than shoulder length must be confined in the leathers or helmet.

20. Chain Guards.
Must be fitted so that the front sprocket is covered, so that a hand or foot cannot come in contact with the chain.

21. Measurements.
Maximum length measured from the leading edge of the front tyre to the outside of the rear guard shall be 2600mm;
Maximum width of the machine shall be determined by the distance between the tracks left by the centre lines of the rear motorcycle wheel and the sidecar wheel and shall measure between 500mm and 1100mm;
Maximum overall width shall not exceed 1500mm;
The wheel base taken from the centre of the front axle to the centre of the rear axle shall measure between 1280mm and 1800mm;
Maximum width of the kneeling tray on the offside of the machine shall be 400mm;
The centre lines of the tracks made by the front and rear wheels where the machine is moving in a forward direction must be no further apart than 75mm;
The tubing used in the construction of the main frame of a sidecar shall have a minimum wall thickness of 1.5mm.

22. Drive.
Shall be only transmitted to the ground through the rear wheel of the motorcycle.

23. Steering.
Must be through the front wheel of the motorcycle and comply with Appendix J & Manual of Motorcycle Sport.

24. Race Numbers & Identification.
All machines must have numbers clearly displayed on at least 2 positions; you are permitted to compete with a number that you have been issued with by the Speedway Management Committee. Should you not have been issued with a race number contact the Committee to obtain one;
All numbers must have a 25mm clearance around them;
Corresponding numbers on the back of the competitors is recommended and should be at least 230mm in height;
It is recommended that all machines have the riders and passenger’s name on the rear guard or wing, in letters of a minimum height of 25mm.

25. General Regulations.
25.1 Racing regulations ref to Appendix J & Manual of Motorcycle Racing.
25.2 All competitors MUST have a competition licence or club licence, which must be produced upon request, for those who don’t have a licence a 1-day licence can be issued providing that the meeting is a closed to club or interclub permitted meeting.
25.3 No Lights or glass permitted.
25.4 Racing shall be in a clockwise direction.
25.5 Juniors shall only compete against other juniors in their own class.
25.6 Logbooks will be issued for this class and must be presented when requested to do so.
25.7 Competitors may change machines in this class providing that they inform the Clerk of Course, so that the Judge/Timekeeper & Steward may be informed.
25.8 Racing regulations will be in accordance with Appendix J and the Manual of Motorcycle Sport.
25.9 Any additional supplementary regulations may be added to these regulations as they are required, any major alterations will be given a time limit to be implemented and competitors will be notified of that time structure.
